Heels exist to make you hate them.

There are two types of characters at a wrestling show, babyfaces and heels.

Babyfaces are our heroes. They come out dancing, clapping, and high fiving. These are the guys we cheer, our heroes. Who knows if they're as squeaky clean in real life as they portray themselves in our wrestling lives? That's not our place to judge. We see them only as they present themselves. For the two hours that we watch them, they are the force of good.

Their counterpart is the heel. Heels are everything dark, rude, arrogant, and evil in the wrestling world. They yell insults at the audience. They do their best to make you hate them, so you will, in turn, cheer for their opponent. I've had the opportunity to talk to a few of them outside the ring, and they are the nicest guys and girls. Inside the ring, however, they will do anything and everything to get you to despise them. It is just their job. It isn't personal. If they target you, it's likely they've heard your insults before, and they believe you are capable of playing back.

Professional wrestling is a drama that plays out in front of us. We're lucky as the audience that we are allowed to participate. If we were watching a musical, we'd not have the liberty to boo the actions of the main villain. We'd not be able to yell "Jean Val Jean" and clap rythmically at the protagonist's exploits. When you cheer and jeer professional wrestlers, you are helping tell the story. Please remember that.

XOXO,
Wrestling Fan Girl.
